Major Sponsor -  World of Tanks   World of Tanks Website

The Lincoln Tank Memorial Group is delighted to announce a £10,000 donation from International Gaming Company ‘World of Tanks’.  World of Tanks is a strategy based game that has become a global phenomenon since its launch in 2010.  It has over 45 million registered players and is suitable to be played by age 7+.  In 2011 it received recognition from the Guinness book of Records for having the most online concurrent users playing simultaneously on one game server.

Donation to Lincoln Tank Memorial from World of Tanks

The Lincoln Tank Memorial Group are planning to erect a life size or larger 2D replica of a Mark I tank on the Tritton Road roundabout near the University, close to where the first battle tank was produced by Wm Foster & Co. Ltd in 1916. The aim of the memorial is to celebrate Lincoln’s engineering achievements and its contribution to the war effort during the two World Wars.  It is hoped that the memorial will be unveiled late next year to coincide with national commemorations to mark the beginning of the First World War.

One Lincoln family (The Beechey family) lost five sons in the war, one of only two families in the country.  It is argued that without the invention of the tank, the war could have dragged on into the 1920’s costing hundreds of thousands more lives on both sides.  The use of the tank broke the stalemate that wasted so many young men’s lives during trench warfare.

Joe Cooke Chairman of the group said ‘this is a major boost to our fundraising efforts and brings our £30,000 final target much closer, we are very grateful to World of Tanks.  It is pleasing to see an International Company show interest in the Memorial, some local companies have already donated but it would be nice if more local companies became involved.  The ‘Tank Roundabout’ will become a well known local landmark and will educate both locals and visitors to Lincoln’s past’.

Al King, World of Tanks Global Brand Director, is originally from Lincolnshire and still visits the City of a regular basis.  He said he had been watching the progress of the Memorial with interest.  Al states’ the memorial is a fitting tribute to the engineering heritage of my home

City as well as commemorating the very important work Foster & Co. Ltd of Lincoln did, in designing and producing the first battle tank’.  The company have recently sponsored the creation of an education centre at Bovington Tank Museum as well as making a donation towards the exhibition and conservation of a Dornier 17 aircraft that has been rescued from the sea bed.
